Researchers from FERG recently completed a successful fall fieldwork campaign, measuring active layer depths at approximately 70 sites across the southern NWT. The active layer depth is the depth between the surface of the soil and the permafrost and is measured at its maximum in the fall. Trained researchers can measure active layer depth by inserting a metal probe into the soil until impenetrable resistance, at which point the researcher can determine if they have reached permafrost or not based on the sound of the probe hitting the bottom.
